Bohemians goal scorer Anto Flood was happy to play a part in his side’s 2-0 win at UCD on Friday night ahead of what he describes as “the biggest derby in Ireland” against Shamrock Rovers next week. After dominating the first half, Bohs had to wait until just before half-time for the breakthrough, which came from captain Owen Heary. Flood revealed that patience proved to be a virtue for the Gypsies against Martin Russel’s side.
“We had to hold our nerve. I had a few chances myself. The keeper pulled off a good save with one of them, and we very unlucky when they got one off the line. We knew that if we kept the work rate up and kept going that one was coming anyway, and we got the two so we're happy enough” revealed Boh’s number nine.
Flood also revealed that he prefers playing in a team with “the two up top”, but he is happy to do contribute in whatever way he can. “We get a lot more chances when we have two up top. I'm not used to playing up front on my own. Just in training during the week, the manager was telling me to get to the 18 yard box and hold it up and pass it out. I felt brilliant and when I did get the ball, I felt I did hold it up and did the right thing. I took that on board and I want to keep it in my game” added Flood
The tall striker, who was excellent in bringing other players into the game, is always willing to help out the team “It's just a job for the team, the one up top. Pat (Fenlon) asked me to play there. He asked me to play right-wing against Dundalk. It's all about teamwork and doing the job that you’re asked. Hopefully I did it to the best of my ability” added the big man.
Flood also revealed that his and Bohemian’s failure to score in their last three league games was on his mind. “Yeah, I had it in my head before the game that I need to get one tonight. It came. It’s always nice to get a goal. That’s what I’m here for to score goals. We are doing stuff now in training and bringing it out onto the pitch and it's working” admitted Flood.
Following Shamrock Rover’s defeat at home to Bray, the Gypies are just two points behind the league leaders heading into next Friday’s encounter at Dalymount Park. Flood revealed that his team mates are very much looking forward to the fixture following victory over UCD. “Yeah it's always a nice boost going into the game when you get a victory under your belt, when you're moving into the biggest derby in Ireland. Hopefully we can get the win next week. All the lads are buzzing for it. We're all looking forward to it now” concluded the big man.
